Napoleon (2023)
Epic Boredom
With a life filled with triumphs and tragedies, you would think a movie like Napoleon, would keep your interest, have you on the edge of your seat. Sadly this version falls short of what it could have been. The battle scenes are truly epic. Either the CGI became much better, or they used a ton of extras, I believe this movie trumps Braveheart for the battle sequences. The problem is the space in between the fighting. Joaquin Phoenix did not help the situation. For much of the movie he delivered his lines in a stoic, comatose delivery. The only times he looked truly awake was when he was eating. What would have helped would have been a bit of humor, from time to time, and greater character development between Napoleon and Josephine. I don't know if it was intentional, but it looked as if Josephine, would rather be knitting a sweater, than make love to Napoleon. Overall the movie is a mixed bag, Joaquin lacked the charisma, that would be needed to lead over 500,000 men to their death.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
So So movie
I like Tom Hanks, I like Mr. Rogers. I don't like Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers. Mr. Rogers spoke deliberately, but was still lively and peppy. The Tom Hanks version, was more like someone talking and reacting to Nyquil. The cadence of Mr. Hanks, does not match the Mr. Rogers I grew up with, The second distraction, was the movie concentrated on the life of another man, that at first, had very little regard for Mr. Rogers. I understand that the overall storyline was, Mr. Rogers changed the lives of those he met, personally or through a television. A biography would have been an appropriate vehicle for the life of this simple but complex man. The move did have its high points, such as Fred Rogers getting into the character of his puppets, his humility and accessibility, even if it conflicted with the time table of his producers. Overall an OK movie, but the 2018 Won't You Be My Neighbor? was a much better film, that left the movie goers, in our theater teary eyed.
God's Not Dead (2014)
God's Not Dead opinion
As expected, a movie about Christianity or religion, made by Christians, may tend to be overzealous, which this movie is. The premise of the movie is that students enter a philosophy class, and their first assignment is to write on a piece of paper "God is Dead", then sign their name to it. It is down to one student, that refuses to write and sign the paper. The professor ostracizes the student, but gives him a chance, via 3 lectures to prove God exists. The movie could have been over in 60 seconds, by the reasoning, If you want me to write God is Dead, then you would have to assume He has to be alive at one time or another, for Him to be dead. If he was alive, then He exists. I blame this flaw on, the Christians that wrote the movie, probably never consulted an atheist, or studied their point of view. As a Christian, I applaud any movies that show God, or Christianity in a positive light. But in the same sense, if you are not going to be objective, and view all non Christians, as stereotypical characters, that are always attacking Christianity, then I think you will drive more away from your beliefs, than you attract. One question to the writers, why was there only one student, who refused to complete the assignment? Even if you were quasi Christian, wouldn't you feel squeamish, by denying GOD before your fellow man?
