Ferrari (2023)
Really? Well it starts out ok but...
It starts out ok as him being a young excited driver with a smile.. then we switch to used up characters who cannot get over a death.. and then it goes downhill from there. We never find out when Fiat took over the company, missed out on great quotes Ferrari said.. and missed out on a happy ending. Wait till you see it on Netflix - I don't need to see it again. Great lighting in it. Love the Director of Photography. Great sound editing. Needed more range from Driver for sure. Make up was excellent. I guess what disappoints me the most is that it is not a roller coaster at all. Just king of goes down and drags you into it.
Elvis (2022)
Another film made by an Editor with ADHD
I do not know why they keep making films like this. I cannot stand watching them. They are soundtracks with a sideshow. Just like Oppenheimer, Face Off tv series, We only get to see two or three seconds of film and then.. we switch to another piece of film. I cannot stand it. I do not know why they need to make films that are slideshows. Wow. I saw the first 15min on Netflix and that was it for me. Back and forth constantly from old Tom Hanks to younger fatter (make up) Tom Hanks. This is not a great way to watch a film.. for me. You might like it but I don't. I would be really pissed off if I paid for this in a movie theatre.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
You won't like my review. Worst Bond film.
Well... if you like to see sped up film in chases and tire screeching in snow.. and people trying to kill Bond for no reason than this film is for you. It's more like Bond vs the henchmen not Bond vs Blofeld. I understand all the dialogue is for COnnery coming out of Lazenby's mouth but it seems like it is a film that is trying out the Bond theme for the first time. A girl is afraid of chickens and an Alergy place on top of a mountain? Could it be more ridiculous? They may spread sneezes all over the world. Wow. First time and lat time I would ever see this movie. I understand the incredible talent Diana is.. but the director never bothered to use it. She sparkled in the Avengers and rarely in this film with a poorly written character that is inconsistent. Skip this version.
Oppenheimer (2023)
If you have ADHD.... watch this film.
Well It is terrible. It is as bad as Casino with Sharon Stone. Nolan threw the index cards of the film (in order) on the ground and said.. we will film it but lets mix it all up and jump around.. and let's never use a clip longer than 20 seconds. Lets use 10 seconds for almost all the clips. Unbelievable. If you like this film then you will like Star Wars 10 as well. Cannot believe it is edited this way. I am sure the people under 35 have loved it. Let's find every good actor in Hollywood who is old and experienced (like visiting an old age home, or the make up was really really good.. I will never see it again.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Will never see again.
No need for spoilers here. Terrible. Poorly written and no need to see it in the theatre. Wait for it to come out on Netflix. Should not have been made, waited too long as well.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Skip this one.
Wow. Terrible doesn't even begin to describe it. I won't give any spoilers here.. but sve your money - wait for it to be on TV. No point in watching it. Really.
Superman Returns (2006)
Really Enjoyed it.
No Spoilers here. It reflects reality and I don't think others like that. I really wish he was real.. and if he was in this reality I think his actions would reflect what our reality is about. Somebody always wants to tke someone down. Luther does that. It shows the broken-ness we have in our relationships and the strength of hope. I hope you enjoy it as well. Brandon was to make three of them.. but that did not happen.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Terrible filme. Clearly I don't represent the majority.
Casey creates a flat character that goes nowhere but down. He is not interested in his brothers son whatsoever. Crappy jobs in other states seem to be his only interest.. that and fighting the world or anyone who looks at him. The son does not have any empathy for this dead dad.. except for fridges. The director shoves music in between scenes of talking.. which is all about everyone talking at the same time.. with dogs or babies crying at the same time. Wow. Never want to see it again. -
Battlestar Galactica (2004)
I was around when the first movie came out in the 70's and it was a great concept.
I love this series and think it is the best television show ever made that I have seen. The concept, characters, writing, effects.. Incredible. I really enjoyed every show. Brilliant thinking behind it made it happen. Richard Hatch and Lett Stringer had a lot to do with it's resurrection. Well done. Enjoy..
The Photograph (2020)
Watch it if your a photographer.
It had no car chases. It has no fights. It doesn't adjust your adrenaline to engage you. It's about stories over time and how people relate to them. It's about people & absent time.
I was alone in the theatre and I felt it was made for me. I am a professional photographer. There is a line in the film that you will discover, relate to that will answer a question in you.
Go see it.
Ad Astra (2019)
Terrible film. Unbelievable that this was so incorrect.
Don't see this film. Spoiler alert - do not read any farther if you have not seen this film.
No Emotion in this film. None. One tear from Brad. Most expensive suicide ever. Let's watch a nuclear bomb with our visor up and let's make lots of noise in space.. with no air. No Air No Sound. Let's fall off a space staition that Brad is tethered to. and it goes on and on... so many things that do no make sense... Brad owes me a coupe of hours.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Pretty much a Masterpiece of filmmaking..
Sound Design is incredible. Focus puller knows what he is doing (finally in a film). Actors dream to be in a film like this with the range needed for this film to be believable. Beautiful singing from Ms Sweet. Quality of each and every part of the film is incredible. Trailers do not match the film. We are denied watching Chris Hemworth walking in the rain.. but see it in the trailer. Very much in the venue of The Hateful Eight. DOP is wonderful but not consistent. Flashbacks are spot on of what you would remember of your past. The thought process behind this film I see on the screen. Go see it on the big screen. I suspect it will not translate on a smaller screen.
First Man (2018)
One of the worst films...
I never want to see this again. I walked out of the theater after he walks on the moon. Never seen a cast so disconnected in my life. No Tripods or steadicams except for the moon shots so if you have motion sickness DO NOT SEE THIS FILM. Same as Hurt Locker - another film I cannot watch because of all the 'over the shoulder crap'. This film has almost no music. It is like attending a funeral. Ryan smiles 5 times in the film. No emotion is what this film should be called. It is boring a lot of the time. Terrible DOP. Great Focus puller. Maybe 20 shots in the film had no movement. Only one of three films I have ever walked out on in my life. Don't see it.
Spectre (2015)
Worst Bond FIlm Made
Don't bother - Saw it a few hours ago. 1. Clearly the Continuity position is vacant now in Hollywood. Spiderman won for the worst in that department.. Spectre bleeds it all the time. Alfred Hitchcock fired one of the crew for moving flowers in Rear Window. 2. Thanks to digital or 4k everyone looks old. Everyone. They should have stopped with Daniel in the last film and recast a new bond. 3. Good luck with the weak story. It drags on and on. 4. Nice car chase. Bond only wrecks one Aston Martin. Not sure why the press are reporting they wrecked 20 Million dollars worth of them. 5. How does the Rolls Royce driver know when and how to pick them up? 6. Amazing how many clothes you can change into with only one bag.
Save your money. I will never see it again.
Empire of the Sun (1987)
In my Top Ten films.
Spielberg says of this film.. it was one of his best films he made that no one saw.
I think it is one of the best films I have ever seen. Looking through the eyes of a 12 year old at war. "People will do anything for a Potato" Spielberg excels at 'Point of view' and this film does not disappoint. This film is about a series of 'moments' that confront and face our reality. It is a confront we can relate to. For a moment when the P51 attacks the Japanese in their POW camp you can feel the humanity arrive back in Jim's lungs..
The photography is nothing less than spectacular. Angles & lighting. Incredible. Tired of digital people like Gladiator? They did not exist then. I like to think of this film as one of the last made with thousands of extras. Real people. Spielberg gave us a treat, an adventure in emotional torment and we are along for the ride. Trapped in a celluloid jail of which we do not get air until we leave the theater. Spielberg takes you where you don't want to go but cannot resist looking. Like a car wreck.
I recommend you set aside a rainy afternoon, some popcorn, turn off your cell phone and put down your tablet. Turn off the lights and watch what happens inside of you.
Immortals (2011)
No celebrity presence at all.. except for John Hurt.
Great visuals, especially at the end with the gods fighting the Titans. Everyone in the film has a body fat index of zero. Seeing ribs is common. Story is something you follow along with OK..but do you care. It is a film you watch, not get involved in.
The 300 look never gets old. Better casting and a more involved story would have made it more interesting. Cavell, nope I will skip him as being a leading man.
John Hurt is great as always..sharing his eyes and presence with us. The Oracle is beautiful and excellent since it is her third or fourth film.
Supernatural (2005)
Best damn TV show ever....
This is the best television show I have ever seen. Take two 'movie actors - in quality' and put them on TV to test their relationships with people and themselves then add some great effects as well as superb writing and some great humor and you get an incredible mix of great, entertaining TV.
Kudo's to the producers and writers and actors.
I think these actors are ready for the big screen - maybe not in this series but in any movie I think they would be great in a film.
I think the best show so far was when Sam fell in love with the women who turns into a werewolf each night - they think they have cured her but they have not and later they find out she turned again and Dean offers to kill her but Sam does it.. You here the shot go off in the background but the camera zooms into Dean's face and he lets out one tear. Excellent.
Miami Vice (2006)
Don't see it - not even on video
Wow.. almost no beginning and no ending - little bit of a climax but geez is this ever bad. Same drug story from any episode you have ever seen in a drug - undercover - cop story. I mean nobody wrote this right.. they just took it from an old episode right? THe focus puller should have been shot along with the writer. Both cannot do their jobs. It has been a long time that I have seen a movie with 9/10 frames out of focus. Wow. Flashy boats and cars.. One sex scene and now Sonny is in love with an Asian women. Ya sure. What was the point of this film.. NOTHING was innovative or refreshing about it - not one line of humour either. I say don't bother - not even on DVD.
Blade Runner (1982)
Best Film Ever Made
Visually this film is stunning. You could stop the DVD or Videotape and print the frame.. and put it on your wall it is made so well. Oddly Harrison hated the film and will never talk about it. Joseph Cronenworth - The Director of photography was so sick he was in a wheelchair. Some shots the shutter was open for over 24 hours (city) and oil drums were lit to make the smoke. It was Sean's first film. Watch for the picture of here and her mother - watch what happens to the shadows in the picture when held. THis is the last film made without ANY computer animation. THis film was voted by the American Cinematographers Association as one of the ten best films made in the last 100 years.
Incredible film.. Rutger's finest acting.
Go see it, do not wait. Jimwww - Producer, Vancouver, BC
