Director: Adil and Bilall
Bad Boys: Ride or Die Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
What’s Good: Lawrence is back better than ever, and he basically steals the show for everyone else, and it is quite nice seeing him in the spotlight once more.
What’s Bad: Plotwise, the movie makes no sense, and it feels quite confusing at times.
Loo Break: As usual, the second act stretches more than it should, so you could go to the loo right there.
Watch or Not?: If you are in for a fun action movie, then this is a must, thanks to its impressive action and good humor.

Martin Lawrence has made it clear. Don’t worry about his health.
A viral clip taken at the actor’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere in Los Angeles raised some concerns among fans, who saw what appeared to be an unsteady Lawrence grasping co-star Will Smith for support.
Lawrence has had public bouts with apparent illness in the past, including incidents of exhaustion and dehydration that required hospitalization.
On Tuesday, Lawrence spoke with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning and addressed concerns about his health
“Now Martin, everybody’s talking [about] you on the balcony waving at people, [you’re] looking around, where you’re looking around? Were you looking around like, ‘Yo, this is massive?’” host Ebro Darden asked. “Because people took it like there was something wrong with your health.”

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die hopefully will hit $75M or more in its global debut this weekend, in a marketplace that has suffered from not only lackluster product but lack thereof. Broken out, that’s $40M+ in U.S. and Canada and $35M abroad in a 92% footprint.
Presales for the R-rated fourthquel are behind that of the previous pre-Covid threequel, Bad Boys for Life, which hit a franchise-high stateside opening of $62.5M 3-day and $101M worldwide in early 2020. A few weeks ago, domestic projections were at $50M, but that simmered to $40M of late per several sources; Sony is officially calling the U.S. start at $30M+. Trepidation stems from the offbeat marketplace, which sources believe will pick up over Father’s Day with Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (currently at a $80M-$85M U.S./Canada projection).

After the worst May the box office has seen in 26 years, theaters are hoping that Sony/Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” can restart Hollywood’s momentum in June with a solid opening weekend. But not everyone is optimistic that will be the case.
Produced on a reported $100 million budget, “Bad Boys 4” is relatively less expensive than many of its peers in the summer action film space. That makes the current projections of a $45-50 million opening weekend — which was below the $62 million three-day opening of “Bad Boys For Life” on MLK weekend in 2020 — a decent start that could allow Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s latest wild ride to turn a profit if it continues to play among male moviegoers over the age of 35.
But “Bad Boys 4” is heading into theaters with as little momentum as any summer title, especially an R-rated one, has had in recent memory.

Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.
Everyone knew that 2024 would not be a great year. It was never going to equal the $9.1 billion of 2023, but $8.5 billion was the hope and $8 billion was the consensus.

Will Smith can’t escape the reminders of his infamous Oscars slap, even in Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
The fourth film in the Bad Boys franchise features a moment reminiscent of the actor’s onstage altercation with Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, but this time Smith is the one being slapped.
In the scene, Smith’s character Mike is having a panic attack. His detective partner Marcus (Martin Lawrence) helps him snap out of it by slapping him repeatedly in a moment played for comedic value.
During the 2022 Oscars, Smith shockingly stood up from his seat and walked onstage to smack Rock across the face after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. After hitting Rock, Smith repeatedly shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”
He has since apologized numerous times...

The “Bad Boys” set mottos have changed quite a bit between the first film and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” according to Will Smith.
When asked about training for the action scenes, Smith told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” that the motto now is “safety first,” but that wasn’t the case for the original.
“That’s probably the biggest difference between ‘Bad Boys’ One and Two and ‘Bad Boys’ Four,” Smith said. “We’re very careful. Safety first. It used to be safety third. Safety third was our motto on the set for ‘Bad Boys’ one.”
Fallon followed up asking the craziest thing Smith and co-star Martin Lawrence did across the entire “Bad Boys” franchise. Lawrence reminds Smith of a specific car stunt he had to do in “Bad Boys 2.”

Within minutes of the actors strike ending on Nov. 9, Ryan Reynolds was making plans to get back to London and the set of Deadpool & Wolverine, one of the many movies shut down in mid-July when the walkout commenced. He and director Shawn Levy were determined to make their July 26 release date, which they were able to accomplish. For other tentpoles, it was too late, and they would ultimately decamp to 2025.
One studio head says the impact of the writers’ walkout, which lasted five months until a settlement was reached on Sept. 27, also played a major role. “Think of it like this — if the actors’ strike shut down the oil refinery, then the writers’ strike shut down the oil fields.”
Toward the end of the SAG-AFTRA talks, studio chiefs were accused of being disingenuous when saying their 2024 release calendars were in danger every day the four-month strike dragged. Now the...

Brought you from the school of “let’s throw everything at the wall and see what sticks”, the latest instalment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise – the first film was released in 1995 – feels less like a real movie and more like an extended TikTok skit. Helmed by Belgian-Moroccan directing duo Adil & Bilall, Bad Boys: Ride or Die reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for the fourth time in the weakest film of the franchise so far.
When their recently murdered police captain gets falsely linked to drug cartels, Miami cops Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) embark on a race against time to clear their old mentor’s name. While Mike is apprehensive about their ability to uncover the conspiracy against their old boss, Marcus has deduced that a recent near-death experience has resulted in him becoming invincible.

Plot: Detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are eager to settle down and enjoy middle age, but when their late, beloved captain (Joe Pantoliano) is framed as a corrupt cop, the two must go off the grid to help clear his name.
Review: Many may not realize it, but Bad Boys For Life was the highest-grossing domestic release of 2020. It made $426 million worldwide, just before the pandemic shut down movies for the rest of the year. It likely would have made even more money had its theatrical run abroad not been truncated. Why is Bad Boys: Ride or Die being treated as a bit less of a box-office event than it should be? Well, a lot has happened in Will Smith’s career since then, with his cachet as a movie star (perhaps) in jeopardy due to the infamous Oscar slap which rocked the industry and hurt his reputation.

At one point in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, one of the principal characters announces, “This is some dysfunctional shit!” With self-aware comments like that, who needs film critics? Not that reviews will matter to the devoted fans of the action-comedy buddy cop franchise that began three decades ago and whose antecedents date as far back as 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and Busting (feel free to cite even earlier ones). It’s a durable concept, even if this fourth installment feels more than a little strained.
Watching Will Smith’s Mike and Martin Lawrence’s Marcus go through their familiar comedic bickering routines has become like spending an evening with a long-married couple whose constant sniping has grown wearisome. While not brand new to the scene, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (collectively known as Adil & Bilall) gained widespread recognition for directing 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, taking over for Michael Bay. It was decently received by critics, with audiences going crazy for it, leading it to finish as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year.

What is the "Bad Boys" franchise, exactly? It's a question worth contemplating, given the unusual history of the series. For one thing, the franchise is nearly 30 years old, and yet the latest entry, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," is only the fourth film in the series. For another, each film to date has had a radically different identity: the original 1995 "Bad Boys" saw Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and director Michael Bay taking their first steps into feature films together, while 2003's "Bad Boys II" is essentially an insane victory lap, with the trio celebrating their stardom while making what amounts to avant garde art in the guise of a summer action movie.
2020's "Bad Boys for Life" saw Bay hand over the directing reins to the young and hungry directing duo of Adil & Bilall (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah), whose work in their native Belgium (especially 2015's "Black") impressed series producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind Bad Boys: Ride or Die, are what people are really talking about when they speak of Michael Bay. In these dark days of anonymous blockbusters with no personality or pop, it is indeed common for people to wax nostalgic about Bay, wishing that Bayhem would one day return to American screens in its full glory.
It’s a weird sentiment though, and not just because Bay hasn’t gone anywhere. But it’s strange because Bay was a byword among film fans of the 2000s and 2010s: shorthand for grotesque messes that emphasized single spectacular shots over basic visual storytelling. When people remember Michael Bay, then, they remember not the actual Bay, but rather the idea of Michael Bay: fun action, striking images, and a sense of humor.

As ancient prophecy foretold, the “Fast & Furious”-ification of the “Bad Boys” franchise is made complete with its fourth installment, which builds on the sordid plot twists of 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life”: an undercover affair! A secret cartel love child who murders Joe Pantoliano! DJ Khaled! This trigger-happy soap opera spins a breakneck and broadly entertaining summer blockbuster about the holy trinity of American traditions: family, corruption, and shooting people. This one even ends with a barbecue.
Vin Diesel’s Wagnerian car saga ran out of gas a long time ago, but the story engine that powered it from the streets to the stratosphere has proven a solid fit for this sunbaked nostalgia act, a ’90s-era property straining to stay relevant in a sick, sad world where Deadpool is a bigger draw than Michael Bay, and Will Smith is less famous for his hits than his slaps.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back policing the streets of Miami in Adil & Bilall’s new sequel. Here’s our Bad Boys: Ride Or Die review.
Playing Mike Lowrey in 1995’s Bad Boys was one of Will Smith’s career-defining roles. He went from the goofball in The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air to a certified action star, and by the time Bad Boys II rolled around in 2003, Smith was one of the biggest names on the planet and Bad Boys became one of the biggest action franchises in modern cinema.
The franchise got a little boost in 2020 with Bad Boys For Life, and returning directors Adil & Bilall try to once again recreate the magic with Bad Boys: Ride Or Die. It’s the fourth instalment in the franchise, and if you weren’t a fan of the first three, Ride Or Die probably won’t convert you.

In 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) says the quiet part out loud about how he and Mike Lowery (Will Smith) had “more days behind them than in front,” and wondered if playing cops and robbers was how they wanted to spend their remaining time. Granted, that film still ended wildly, with Mike fighting his own son and his ex, an actual witch, in a building on fire, but that’s neither here nor there. Adil & Bilall’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, as it turns out, takes the question a bit more seriously, especially after Mike finds himself finally getting hitched to a beautiful woman (Melanie Liburd) and, in the wake of the death of Joe Pantoliano’s Captain Howard, has Anakin Skywalker-esque nightmares about losing her.

If there are five ages of man, maybe there are four ages of “Bad Boys.” There’s the early age — the original “Bad Boys” came out in 1995 — of youthful effrontery: zappy, flashy, mouthy, decadent. There’s the age when the heroes start to say, “We’re too old for this shit!” There’s the age when they’re too old to even be saying that.
And then there’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the franchise, in which the actors, the audience, and the whole culture is now so old for this shit that perhaps the only thing left to do is to ramp up the trash nostalgia to new levels of shameless overkill. It’s a truth of the universe that all blockbuster action series must come to an end (“Die Hard with a Lethal Weapon for Another 48 Hrs.” is now ancient history). But in “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,...

It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
Perhaps the most action-packed edition yet, Bad Boys: Ride or Die turns the tables on the two title stars as Mike Lawrey (Smith) and partner Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) find themselves on the run and on the other side of the law. Their beloved late Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who died at the hands of vicious cartel member Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipio) in the previous film, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, is accused posthumously of being on the take from the cartels. The evidence seems undeniable and is upheld by Captain Rita (Paola Núñez), the new chief of the Advanced Miami Metro Operations, a former girlfriend...

Whatcha gonna do when “Bad Boys” comes for the box office? If you’re a theater owner, the answer is hopefully sell some tickets.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, is targeting $30 million to $50 million from 3,850 theaters in its first weekend of release. As that cavernous range suggests, estimates vary greatly depending on whom you ask. Sony has offered the soft $30 million figure, while rivals and independent tracking services believe the $45 million to $50 million range is more likely.
Adding to opening-weekend ambiguity: The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars. Have audiences soured on Smith or will they forgive and forget in favor of another “Bad Boys” reunion?...

It looks like Will Smith is finally in the “redemption arc” of his life all thanks to Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die which marks the fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith will be reprising their roles as Marcus and Mike and we honestly cannot wait to see their chemistry on-screen once again.

Maybe it’s the Florida heat, but this series about Miami cop-buddies named Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) just gets ever more delirious. What started out as a flashy-but-routine police thriller got a sequel in which they invaded Cuba (this was probably the most restrained part of the film) and another in which they went up against a witch (an actual witch). Now, coming quick off the staggering success of part three, we get Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, in which, early on, Marcus suffers a heart attack and experiences a lavish vision quest, complete with magical parrot and a Force Ghost-esque incarnation of Joey Pants. Yes, Joe Pantoliano’s Captain Howard, previously a nuclear-tempered ballbuster prone to spitting lines such as, “I’ve got so much brass up my ass that I can play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’!”, in this movie is a serene presence, guiding our heroes from beyond the grave.

Family fare was evidently the preferred choice during the U.K. and Ireland school half-term holidays as Paramount’s “If” bounced up the charts to the top spot.
In its third weekend, “If” collected £1.5 million ($2 million) for a total of £9.5 million ($12.2 million). In its second weekend, in second place, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” clawed another £1.3 million and now has a total of £6.2 million.
In third place, in its fourth weekend, Disney’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” chest thumped to a further £1 million for a total of £13.2 million.
Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which was neck-and-neck with “Garfield” in its opening weekend, earned £963,976 in its second weekend in fourth place and now has a total of £4.5 million.
Rounding off the top five was Universal’s “The Fall Guy” that took in £524,320 in its fifth weekend for a total of £11.1 million.

Another weekend in the books, another reason to be pessimistic about the state of the box office in 2024. We are just coming off of the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades in terms of ticket sales, thanks to weak performances by both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie." Now? With no meaningfully big movies entering the marketplace, theaters were left to suffer -- so much so that this past weekend now ranks as literally one of the worst weekends the summer box office has experienced in a quarter century.
"The Garfield Movie" held far better than "Furiosa" in its second weekend, as the animated film topped the charts with a $14 million haul. That's good for Sony, but terrible for the industry at large. When we're in the midst of the summer moviegoing season and the number one movie on a given weekend pulls in $14 million, we're in trouble.

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.
