The mystical realm of Harry Potter serves as the perfect backdrop for a go-to comfort movie. Under the aegis of directors like Chris Columbus and David Yates, the movie adaptations of the globally cherished novel series were a prominent success. But would the wizardly creations have been as revered, had someone like the three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg helmed the project?

Astoundingly enough, the Jurassic Park director did come incredibly close to directing a Harry Potter film, only to forsake it after a few initial months. Turns out, the magic-infused world of Hogwarts wasn’t enticing enough for him to recreate on the silver screen. Or challenging, for that matter.

The Thin Blue Line actor David Haig is adapting his World War II thriller play Pressure into a film. Here are the details.
While David Haig is perhaps best known for his role as Inspector Grimm in Ben Elton’s The Thin Blue Line, he also an acclaimed dramatic actor, delivering the astonishingly dark Playing Sandwiches monologue in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads series.
Haig is also a prolific playwright, however. He penned the 2004 play My Boy Jack, about Rudyard Kipling’s son fighting in the first World War. He adapted into a television film in 2007, in which he also starred alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Kim Cattrall.
Pressure premiered in 2018. Haig wrote and also starred in the production, which chronicled the story of the decision makers behind the D-Day landings, the tiny window of opportunity they were afforded in choosing between June 5th or June 6th 1944 and the pressure cooker environment in which they worked,...

Broadway had been making progress toward an industrywide recovery, but new data shows halted momentum in the most recent season.
According to data from the industry trade group The Broadway League, overall grosses for the 2023-2024 season were down about 2.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching $1.54 billion compared to $1.58 billion the prior year. And compared to the 2018-2019 season, the last full season before the pandemic closed all theaters, grosses were down 17 percent.
Even if viewed as largely flat compared to last season, that spells trouble for the industry, given the rising cost of producing a show.
“Every year our expenses go up at least five percent, if not more, because we so outpace inflation,” says Ken Davenport, producer of the Neil Diamond musical A Beautiful Noise. “So flat is terrible.”
Attendance was also largely flat compared to this past season, which ran from May to May, coming in...

Box Office – Srikanth is just a little below 50 lakhs on Tuesday(Photo Credit –T-Series/Facebook)
After bringing in 52 lakhs on Monday, Srikanth dropped around 10% on Tuesday with 47 lakhs coming in. This is regular trending, though when a film is collecting on the lower side then one would like to see the numbers being constant on each of the days.
That said, all the films did get impacted by elections results wave on Monday and Srikanth was not an exception. In fact it dropped lesser than Mr. & Mrs. Mahi which has seen a dip of around 15%. Nonethelsss, it is expected that from here on the film would be stable and stay in that 45 lakhs zone today as well as tomorrow.
Srikanth has done its job already with 46.33 crores in its kitty and 47 crores set to be crossed by end of the fourth week. Post that 50 crores will come easily as well,...

Box Office – Mr & Mrs Mahi stays stable on Tuesday(Photo Credit – Instagram)
After bringing in 2.21 crores on Monday, the need of the hour for Mr & Mrs Mahi was to stay stable at the box office for the rest of the weekdays. Though not major, but still a drop had come on Monday, which means that from here, the film was bound to follow a normal trajectory.
That said, this is also the election results week, which means a lot of focus is on current affairs, and hence, movies have taken a backseat in general. It’s also quite visible that even promotion and marketing efforts for many films have slowed down a bit, and that will stay on to be the case for the entire week, especially with the kind of election outcome that has come, which is different from the common consensus till a week before. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released in domestic theatres on June 4, 2004; this year, it turns 20. It is reportedly the fan-favorite installment, but unfortunately, it is the lowest-grossing Harry Potter movie.

Avengers: Endgame is one of the greatest Marvel movies ever to be made. Not only did it perfectly bring together all the different characters in one space without feeling like clutter, but presented a conclusive end to the decades-long saga. Just when all hope seemed lost, the movie proved that there is always a bigger picture hidden in plain sight and that one only needs to look for it.

Marvel Studios has a rather odd calendar in store for 2024. After years of lining up a slew of movies and shows post the Avengers: Endgame storyline, it has dialed back significantly with Deadpool & Wolverine standing out as its sole release for the year. Regardless, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer has raked in sufficient hype and nostalgia to sail forward as one of the most anticipated Marvel movies in recent times, setting up the stage for a mega box-office showdown.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Alfonso Cuarón knew he wanted franchise installment “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” to be different from the other “Potter” films. So the professor assigned his Hogwarts, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff students some homework.
The director wanted the 2004 “Harry Potter” feature to have a “noir” tone, which Cuarón believed would best present the coming-of-age moment for both the trio of characters played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, as well as for the film series itself.
Cuarón was the first new director to step in after Chris Columbus directed the first two films.
“Chris [Columbus] would help them with intonation and get them excited; Alfonso was treating them as young adults: what are you feeling?” the franchise’s producer David Heyman recalled to Total Film for a 20th-anniversary retrospective interview.
Part of getting the core cast to grow up onscreen was to have each actor meditate on their respective characters’ motivations.

The updated iteration of Gerard Alessandrini’s long-running Forbidden Broadway revue is heading back to Off Broadway following a brief flirtation with the prospect of a Broadway move.
Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song will begin previews August 23 at Theater555 on West 42nd Street. Opening night is set for Thursday, September 12.
Earlier this year, producers for the show announced that the satirical revue would make its decades-in-coming Broadway debut at the Hayes Theatre sometime this summer, but the planned staging was an early casualty of Broadway’s very crowded spring-summer season. Last month, the Broadway producers Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang and Tracey McFarland said the Hayes staging wouldn’t happen due to the “enormously crowded” Broadway landscape.
Today, Forbidden Broadway creator Gerard Alessandrini said, “I am thrilled that this latest incarnation of the show that I had been preparing for more than a year, can now open Off Broadway,...

J.K. Rowling has hit out at the double standards of friends who have rushed to trash her views on transgender rights.
In an extract from the book The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht, published by The Times of London newspaper, Rowling said she had been surprised by colleagues who had condemned her views in public, only for them to email her privately to check they remained friends.
“People who’d worked with me rushed to distance themselves from me or to add their public condemnation of my blasphemous views,” she wrote.
“In truth, the condemnation of certain individuals was far less surprising to me than the fact that some of them then emailed me, or sent messages through third parties, to check that we were still friends.”
Rowling added: “Those appalled by my position often fail to grasp how truly despicable I find theirs. I’ve watched ‘no debate’ become...

“I wasn’t prepared for how much it really meant to me,” admits Maria Friedman on her first ever Tony Award nomination for directing the hit revival of “Merrily We Roll Along.” This recognition serves as a capstone on a decades-long relationship with the “genius musical.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Friedman, who also works as an actor, starred in a UK production of “Merrily” in 1992 under the guidance of creators Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. She would return to this show when she first tried her hand at directing. During a break between acting gigs, she recalls her husband saying that she would “go nutty” without a project to dig into. So, she accepted an offer to direct and took to it immediately. “It was like when something really fits you properly,” reveals Friedman, “it didn’t feel complicated.”

Tom Burke says he requested media training from the BBC to help him handle questions about J.K Rowling’s strident views on transgender rights.
Burke is currently on the publicity trail for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but he has recently filmed Season 6 of BBC/HBO series Strike, which Rowling pens under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
The actor told The Independent that he asked for media training ahead of an interview with the publication, during which he was careful to remain neutral on the trans debate.
“I’ll preface all this by saying, what I want for that situation is for it to mend,” he said. “I want those disparate groups to find resolution. I don’t want to say anything in the wrong context, or at the wrong time, which is going to make the situation worse, because it’s not nice, right? There’s so much antipathy going on.

Harry Potter is undoubtedly one of the best books ever to be written and the best fantasy movies ever to have been made. Everything from the visuals to the storyline, the production beautifully captured the very essence of the books and literally brought magic to the big screen. While it was Jk Rowling and her touch that ultimately made the movies successful, it was also the persistence and determination of the young cast members that made the movies a beloved part of cinema today.

The Harry Potter franchise became quite an iconic franchise when the books were adapted into the films. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and, Rupert Grint as the main leads, the franchise’s magic can never be redone in modern times.

When Alfonso Cuarón got the call to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, arguably one of the best movies in the franchise, he was very unsure about it. The director was fresh out of an acclaimed erotic road trip drama Y tu mamá también and the sudden shift to a Harry Potter movie without having virtually no clues about it was not a cakewalk for the director.

Caleb Carr, whose bestselling 1994 novel The Alienist made the author a household name who saw the book adapted into a 10-episode limited series on TNT, died of cancer Thursday at his home in Cherry Plains, New York. He was 68.
His death was announced by his brother Ethan Carr to The New York Times.
Carr was born on August 2, 1955, into a New York City family haunted by violence and abuse: His father was Lucien Carr, a Beat Generation journalist convicted of manslaughter for the 1944 killing of what today would be deemed a sexual predator. Working in a big franchise is a high-risk, high-reward venture for an actor. And even then, the aftermath may not be as favorable as one might think. There are roles that become embedded in the viewers’ minds, like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man or Daisey Ridley’s Rey, which makes it difficult for them to see the performers in a different role.

Max‘s TV remake of the “Harry Potter” series won’t hit the streamer until 2026, which gives fans of the character plenty of time to speculate about the show. For instance, beyond rehashing a successful IP in a blatant cash-grab maneuver, why should this series exist? That’s a topic for another piece, however. A milder query would be about the potential involvement of the original Warner Bros.

“Like the rest of the world, [I’m] very excited to watch as an audience member,” Radcliffe said, before adding an “I don’t think so” as to whether he will make a cameo.
“I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break,” Radcliffe continued. “And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it.”
Radcliffe punted on whether or not Max approached him to star in the series, which is slated to premiere in 2026.

Notwithstanding the iconic nature of the Harry Potter IP, it is one of the most astonishing works of imagination and creativity combined. But bringing the words from a literary franchise to life cannot be so easy. The Harry Potter films were absolutely magical and the cast members had a huge role in making them so. Every single character was so perfectly cast that it would often be difficult to know where the actor ends and where the character begins. From Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall to Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger, all these characters hold a special part in our hearts.

Daniel Radcliffe says it would be wise for the upcoming “Harry Potter” television series on Max to distance itself from the iconic film series, which means the potential for him to cameo in the show is quite low. Radcliffe famously headlined eight “Harry Potter” movies in the title role from 2001 to 2011.

“I don’t think so,” he told E! Online when asked about starring in the series in any capacity. “I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break. And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it. I’m very happy to just watch along with everyone else.”

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Ever since HBO announced their Harry Potter TV show, fans have been going wild with speculations, theories, and expectations all flooding online platforms. Among the most discussed things is the inclusion of the original cast as cameos, and everyone seems to have strong opinions on that: fans are either 100% for it or hate the very idea of mixing the movies and the series together.
Daniel Radcliffe, the Og Harry Potter star, has chosen his camp in this debate.
Radcliffe Addressed His Cameo in the TV Show
While a few original Harry Potter stars have already revealed they’d love to return for a quick cameo in HBO’s upcoming series, Daniel Radcliffe is completely against it. According to the actor, it would ruin the atmosphere of the new adaptation, and there’s overall no good reason to throw old soldiers into the new battle.

Gary Oldman has addressed some previous comments on the Harry Potter franchise whereby he called his performance as fan-favorite character Sirius Black “mediocre.”
Oldman spoke while at the Cannes press conference for Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope on Wednesday and wanted to ensure no fans of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world adaptations were offended by his words.
“Not to disparage anyone out there who are fans of the Harry Potter films and the character who I think is much beloved … What I meant by that is I think as any artist, actor, painter, you are always hypercritical of your own work.
“If you’re not and you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, that would be death to me. If I had watched a performance of myself and thought: ‘My God, I’m fantastic in this,’ that would be a sad day. My best work is next year.” He attempted to clarify what he meant.

The world of comic book movies stands largely on the shoulders of devoted actors who have dedicated a large portion of their careers to playing famed roles. From Chris Evans as Captain America to Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow, the list goes on. However, in terms of holding on to that role for the longest time ever, no one comes close to Hugh Jackman and his stint as Wolverine. However, despite a staggering tenure of 24 years and continuing, the actor has not evaded the thought of letting go of his character.
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine | 20th Century Studios
A brilliant twist of fate landed the Australian actor in his now synonymous role. Originally slated for a different actor, Jackman still has not forgotten the mercy of fate. Professionally enough, he also knows how to return the favor when the time comes.
