Astro Boy Concept Art Hits Web

5 January 2009 4:59 PM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

I think I'm supposed to be more excited about Astro Boy, the CG adaptation of the manga classic coming from Imagi International. The movie certainly has a stellar cast, with Freddie Highmore voicing the title character - a sort of science fiction Pinocchio if you will - and other cast members including Kristen Bell, Donald Sutherland, and Nicolas Cage. If nothing else, it's bound to sound interesting. Here's the thing though - I'm not a fan of manga, and I'm not a fan of Astro Boy, which means this movie is going to have to provide more than a decent cast to get my attention. It may have made the right move, because new pictures of concept art and character shots released by Imagi look visually impressive enough to intrigue me. Now, most of this is concept art, so who knows how it'll translate into the actual film, but I

Patricia Arquette Cuts Her Husband Loose

5 January 2009 3:15 PM, PST | From E! Online | See recent E! Online news

On the job, Patricia Arquette sees dead people. In real life, she sees divorce lawyers. The Medium star has filed for divorce from her husband of two and a half years, Punisher hero Thomas Jane. (View the petition.) She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, according to documents filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The duo, who swapped vows May 15, 2006, have a 5-year-old daughter, Harlow Olivia Calliope. Per her petition, Arquette is requesting sole legal and physical custody of the child, with visitation privileges for Jane. This was the second marriage for both actors. DVD Review - "Bangkok Dangerous"

5 January 2009 7:14 AM, PST | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

By far the worst film ever played in by “Oscar® winner” Nicolas Cage. The star of so many a remembered film powered this abomination to a top spot over possibly the poorest box office weekend of the year. Now it arrives on DVD. I have always been a Nicolas Cage fan from his early years up until “Lord of War,” thereafter, the death of a superstar began. From “Wicker Man,” “Ghost Rider” through “Next” and now in the Pang brothers painful “Bangkok Dangerous,” Cage’s latest starring roles are questionable to say the least. Forgive the awfully bad hairstyle, as eye-prodding as it is, Cage’s acting skills have deteriorated largely due to his constant efforts at trying to staple himself in as an action star...

January 2009 DVD and Blu-Ray Preview

5 January 2009 5:18 AM, PST | From ESplatter.com | See recent ESplatter news

Now that we're past the holidays, horror films are finally getting released to DVD again on a pretty regular basis. The New Year is getting off to a lively start with "Eden Lake," an excellent horror movie from the producers of "The Descent" -- review here -- and "Alphabet Killer," the new horror movie from the director of "Wrong Turn". Also out this Tuesday is "Midnight Movie," a great little horror movie -- review here. "The Wicker Man" is getting released on DVD again from Lionsgate on January 6. That would be the 1973 version with Christopher Lee -- not the bad remake with Nicolas Cage. This is also apparently the shortened 88-minute cut of the film. Next week, January 13, we're getting the much-hyped "Tokyo Gore Police," Alex Aja's mixed bag of a horror movie "Mirrors" -- review here -- and an uncut version of "My Bloody Valentine" -- the original.

Excl: Taken clip!

I've always thought, that if given the chance, Liam Neeson could be one hell of an action star. I mean if Nicolas Cage can make that leap from Raising Arizona to Con Air, Liam Neeson certainly can do it. Well the man who was Oskar Schindler will get his chance to kick some ass later this month in Taken. Neeson stars in the film as an ex-spy living in the Us. When his daughter heads off to Europe to follow U2, she is kidnapped and being sold to the sex slave industry (only one of the bad...

Relativity goes Rogue, buying genre company

4 January 2009 6:57 PM, PST | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

Variety reports that Relativity Media has completed its purchase of horror specialist Rogue Pictures. We previously reported here that Relativity had been working to acquire Rogue from parent company Universal, which nonetheless will retain distribution rights to the banner’s features for most of the world.

Rogue, which began as a sister company to Universal-owned prestige outfit Focus Features, has released the likes of Seed Of Chucky, Shaun Of The Dead, the same team’s gory cop comedy Hot Fuzz, CRY_WOLF, The Return, Doomsday and the Hitcher and Assault On Precinct 13 remakes, and had its first major horror hit with last year’s The Strangers (pictured), for which a sequel script has recently been completed by original writer/director Bryan Bertino. Other fright flicks in the Rogue pipeline include David S. Goyer’s The Unborn, opening this Friday, the film versions of the Hack/Slash comics and Castlevania video games,

It's Astro Boy!

4 January 2009 2:51 PM, PST | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

I'm not a fan of Astro Boy and I don't know many people that actually are, but Hollywood has a history of jumping all over things with a built in fanbase and I guess this qualifies. Astro Boy, which will be released this summer, is going to be a CGI gong show directed by David Bowers and will feature a cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucas, Kristen Bell and of course, the child star-du-jour Freddy Highmore as the titular...

Trailer Park: Rodents, Martial Arts and Bald Sweathogs

2 January 2009 5:32 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

G-Force

Guinea pigs in the employ of the FBI? Well, why the hell not? This is a live action film with digital rodents voiced by Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, and Tracy Morgan. I have to imagine this one got green lit after Alvin and the Chipmunks started pulling in the bucks. The concept has a certain goofy charm, but the trailer has surprisingly few laughs. Judge for yourself on July 24.

Streetfighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

When I hear "Streetfighter" I think more of the Sonny Chiba film The Street Fighter and its sequels, but that's a different franchise entirely. This film is of course based on the long running series of video games (the first of which was released in 1987 as an arcade game) and stars the lovely Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame. The trailer is a little hard to follow since the narration is in Japanese. What

Concept Art and Character Stills for Astro Boy

2 January 2009 12:20 AM, PST | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

Imagi Studios has unveiled several images for Astro Boy at their official site.  The images include character stills/model rendering and concept art with some revealing two never before seen characters: a robot dog designed as a trash disposal and an unnamed girl who I assume Kristen Bell will provide the voice.  Heres the official synopsis:

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named Tenma (Nicolas Cage). Powered by positive “blue” energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly.

Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance, Astro Boy encounters many other colorful characters along the way.  Through his adventures, he learns the joys and emotions of being human, and gains the strength to embrace his destiny. Ultimately learning his friends and family are in danger,

Disney Gives A Peek Into G-Force

1 January 2009 3:33 PM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

We've seen dogs as super-heroes in Underdogs and cats and dogs as secret agents in Cats & Dogs. It looks like Disney is taking things to an unused animal with the upcoming G-Force: guinea pigs. The movie shows the FBI using animals to help with their work - in this case a highly intelligent group of guinea pigs, voiced by everyone from Nicolas Cage to Tracy Morgan. If you want a glimpse of the expression on my face when I saw this trailer, check out Will Arnett in the actual trailer. His facial expression as he's being told about this group of super-heroic animals matches mine pretty perfectly. Yet, I have no doubt this will wind up being a big hit for Disney, and another movie that makes kids want to have yet another pet at home. Check out the inside look over at Disney's Go Network. The trailer for the new Bruckheimer hamster-venture, G-Force, is now online. While the pictures that arrived a few days ago looked cute, we’re now worried that we have Beverly Hills Chihuahua II on our hands as a group of highly intelligent, trained rodents fight evil. There’s a solid voice cast – including Sam Rockwell, Penelope Cruz, Nicolas Cage and Tracy Morgan – alongside some of the best comic talent (Will Arnett? Zack Galifianakis? What the hell are truly funny people doing in this?*) but the footage has a... .

Wtf? Nic Cage as Anwar Sadat?

1 January 2009 3:01 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Assuming for the moment that this is legitimate, let's throw ut on the "Bad Casting Decisions" pile and if there's any left over, we can toss it in the general direction of our "He's Getting How Much?" pile.

Multiple news sources report that Nicolas Cage has reached an agreement to play slain Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in an upcoming Egpytian television mini-series. I'm sorry...what? Nic Cage as Anwar Sadat? How will that work? According to the story, Cage will drop about 15 pounds for the role. Oh. Well that explains it then. He'll look just like Sadat once he gets even thinner.

For his efforts, Cage will get paid a whopping $40 million, which will be so many hair plugs. You have no idea how non-balding he'll be now. Still, this might be a record sum for an actor being utterly and undeniably miscast.
